Know your old Legos

The first thing you need to get your head around before buying or selling old Lego sets is that different things affect their worth. Sure, you might have an early edition of a rare Lego set featuring a limited edition minifigure, but you're not going to get top dollar for them if they've been battered around, the box is ruined, and there are parts missing. So before you get too excited, let's look at what you need to know about old Lego sets before you buy or sell them!

Condition

There's an entire language around Lego condition that those new to buying and selling need to understand. Whether you're listing your used Lego sets for sale or buying one, look out for these terms:

- New - This means that the Lego has never been played with, and remains in the plastic bags with instructions etc available.

- Lightly used - This means that the Lego has been played with, although it remains in near-perfect condition.

- Heavily used - This means the Lego has been played with and there are obvious signs of wear and tear, with possible broken pieces.

- Sealed in box - Mint condition because the box has never been opened.

- Sealed in damaged box - Box has never been opened but it has been battered around a little.

Know the condition of the Lego sets you're buying/selling, because this will affect the value of them.

Know your sets

We're assuming if you're looking for old Lego sets for sale, then you already know a thing or two about them. We could probably say the same for those of you that are selling your used sets too. But still, it's best to make sure you know exactly what set you're buying/selling. If you don't have the original box, or you're unsure, then look up the set/part numbers online. Knowing your set is important, because it can seriously affect the value.

Look at market value

Talking of value, get to know how much the set is typically worth by looking at the market value. There are a couple of great websites that discuss Lego set values, so check out places like BrickLink and BrickSet for information about recent sales.

Once you've done that though, it's always worth looking at online selling spaces such as eBay to see what others are asking for the particular Lego set right now. If you're buying, this means you won't pay too much, and if you're selling, then you know how much you're set is actually worth so you don't get ripped off or look like you're asking for too much from potential customers.

Where to sell your Legos (and buy them)

Online options

When you're buying or selling old Lego sets, you can guarantee a bigger reach to more potential customers or sellers online. That means you've got more chance of finding what you want to buy, or more chance of completing a sale, so online options are always good. Here are our top recommendations of the Lego selling sites:

BrickLink

BrickLink is a dedicated buying/selling Lego website, so if you want a large community that's all about Lego sets and minifigures, start here.

Brick Owl

In a similar vein, Brick Owl is another great online space for buying and selling Lego sets. Just be aware that both BrickLink and Brick Owl take a small commission for facilitating the sale, so you may make slightly less selling on these sites.

eBay

It might not be dedicated to just Lego sets, but there's a bustling community of hungry buyers and sellers on eBay, and it's a great place to find amazing deals and lots of customers.

Facebook groups

There are plenty of dedicated Facebook groups that allow posts about buying/selling different Lego sets. Check in your area. There might even be a local group you can talk about buying/selling with for some great deals.

Bricks and Minifigs

Bricks and Minifigs is the online space you head to when you're buying or selling classic and rare Lego sets and minifigures. They specialize in early editions and rare sets, so if you have one or want one, this is the best place to go!

Offline options

Selling offline, however, can be a safer way of doing it. Selling to customers in person might bring you more money, because they're able to see the condition of the set for themselves. Even as a buyer it's safer too, because online scams happen, and not everyone is honest about their Lego sets conditions. If you want a safer option, then try some of our top recommendations for offline sales:

Yard sales

Sounds crazy, right? But we, like everyone else in the Lego world probably, have found some amazing deals at yard sales. We've also sold our fair share of sets at them too. Set one up yourself if you're selling, or head to a few local ones to see what's available if you're buying.

Thrift stores

This is another great place to look for and sell Lego sets. Thrift stores like to have a little of everything, and Lego sets are no exception. Don't head here if you have something really rare and special, but if it's quite a common set, then you can pick one up or sell it at a thrift store for a pretty good deal.

Private sales to friends

Selling to friends in the Lego community is probably the best way to sell or buy Lego sets offline. Why? Because everybody involved in the sale knows Lego. They know the true value, how much the set means, and how rare it really is. There's no ripping people off here, because everyone is already on the same page.

Which is right for you?

Deciding which is right for you - online or offline sales - depends on what's important to you. Would you prefer the safe bet of an offline sale? Or does the larger customer/seller base of the online community outweigh the risks? Whatever you decide to do, just be reasonable in your expectations, be prepared to strike some deals, and do your research beforehand, and then you can guarantee the fairest price both as a seller and a buyer.

I have over a thousand lego pieces in three separate bins. I am wondering how to sell these Legos online. They are not sorted and they are from all different Lego sets. My kids have moved on from building Legs and I want to make up for the money I spent on the sets. The box dimensions are 14 inches high, 24 inches long and 12 inches in width. These boxes are filled to the very top of regular Lego pieces. I also have a fourth bin of Duplo lego pieces. Same dimensions. is there any way you can help me? Thank you for your time and consideration.
